Kombucha, Baby!
The Barber and Whiteford households are huge fans of Kombucha
(pronounced kom-BOO-cha), which we affectionately call kom-boooch! This effervescent probiotic elixir is a tad vinegary, so we drink it more for the way it makes us feel than for its taste. At the onset of the flu years ago, Sara discovered Kombucha at a natural-foods store in San Francisco’s famed Haight-Ashbury district, and she experienced a miraculous and unforgettable turnaround. It may not always cure your flu, but Kombucha has a myriad of health claims, from supporting alkalinity to detoxifying the body, and it provides an energizing lift every time you drink it. Long live kom-boooch, baby!
1 cup/240 ml grape Kombucha such as Synergy
1 fresh ripe banana
1 cup/115 g frozen strawberries
3/4 cup/85 g frozen blueberries
Combine the Kombucha and banana in a blender. Add the strawberries and blueberries and blend until smooth.
Makes about 2 1/2 cups/600 ml; serves 2

Strawberries All the Whey
Mary created this smoothie for Jackson and William when they were recovering from tonsillectomies. Nursing sore throats, they were both sent to bed with ten days’ worth of antibiotics and codeine-laced Tylenol. With a generous helping of organic strawberries for a dose of fiber and antioxidants, a double dose of probiotic yogurt, and a scoop of whey protein to boost the boys’ immune systems, this nutritional meal replacement led to their speedy recovery. The results were astounding—no upset tummies after all those antibiotics, no constipation from all that codeine, and a “whey” quick recovery.
3/4 cup/170 g strawberry Bifidus Regularis yogurt such as Activia
1/2 cup/120 ml vanilla probiotic drink such as Activia
2 cups/225 g frozen strawberries
1/4 cup/20 g whey protein powder
Combine the yogurt and probiotic drink in a blender. Add the strawberries and protein powder. Blend until smooth.
Makes about 2 1/2 cups/600 ml; serves 2

oh my goodness such an amazing smoothie! i am a big fan of kombucha but have never put it in a smoothie before! will post a link to pictures soon!

Both of these sound good. I’m really interested in the kombucha one. I’ve never tried it before, but it sounds like it has some wonderful properties.
